Congratulations to dental anesthesiologists nationwide! The National Commission on Recognition of Dental Specialities and Certifying Boards has recognized anesthesiology as the newest dental specialty. The recognition process required an application from the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists to the National Commission with documentation that the proposed specialty discipline fulfills the six requirements defined in the “Requirements of Dental Specialities”. The overseeing National Commission accepted the application on March 11, recognizing dental anesthesiology as the tenth specialty in dentistry. The American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists must now proceed with the formation of a national certifying board for its diplomates.
This is a welcome and overdue addition to the ranks of specialty dentistry and advanced graduate education. With formal dental specialty recognition this discipline should experience growth.
